From 2-16 July 2023, Julidans will set the city alight with international contemporary dance.
At the festival, you will discover works of both world-famous and notorious choreographers in a broad programme with 40 different dance performances and shows. At various locations across the city, with Internationaal Theater Amsterdam as the festival heart, dance makers will show their vision on personal and social themes. Julidans is the festival that inspires connoisseurs and curious minds alike.

MOVING OUT LOUD
As every year, Julidans showcases the current state of international contemporary dance in this 32nd edition as well. Today’s dance is quite outspoken, and the Julidans choreographers make no secret of their opinions.
They dare to show who they are and what they think and feel. For instance, they argue for a stronger connection with nature or our emotions, connect mythical stories from the past with future vistas or call attention to social issues.
Julidans presents a multitude of different voices, opinions, styles and tastes this year. Deafeningly loud or in a barely audible whisper, their stories take shape in dance that leaves no one untouched: MOVING OUT LOUD. We will hear and see the dance makers on the Julidans stages in the city centre and far beyond, in the swimming pool or at the museum, on the squares, in the park and across the streets of Amsterdam.
At Julidans, you see, amongst others, the latest work by eclectic Portuguese choreographer Tânia Carvalho. In Versa-vice, a caleidoscopic statement, the choreographer sees hope for the future by looking the monster of polarisation in the mouth. The human voice literally has an important role in Vástádus eana / The answer is land. Elle Sofe Sara is a Sami, and in this work she offers a contemporary perspective on self-determination and our relationship with the earth in a large-scale production with yoiks sung live on stage. In 3 against 2: Psycho Tropics, Brazilian choreographer duo Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo present a multicoloured clash of rhythm, movement and voices in a fantastic collage of queerness, mythology, club and carnival. In Unearth, Jefta van Dinther invites you on an introspective journey. Led by vocals, in a prolonged trance experience, the work advocates not losing touch with our feelings in a world dominated by technology. In MIKE, Canadian Dana Michel’s unique performance art stresses the need to trust each other in this increasingly complex world.
Notable are the many outdoor projects, accessible free of charge, that the festival features this year. At surprising locations, fans and casual passers-by are confronted with dance. For example, Julidans visitors are treated to a forest of performers turned upside down (Woods by Clarice Lima/ Futura & Linha de Fuga) or a herd of ‘wild horses’ that challenge power relations (City Horses by Byström Källblad).
Within Julidans, there is also plenty of attention for dance makers based in the Netherlands – with performances by Andreas Hannes, Astrit Ismaili, Club Guy & Roni, Gil Gomes Leal and breakdance collective 155/ Maas Theater en Dans, among others.
This year, Julidans performances can be seen in Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, Theater Bellevue, Meervaart, Podium Mozaïek, Vondelpark Openluchttheater, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and at surprising locations in the city. This year, W139 and Frascati join as new Julidans venues.
Julidans is part of Big Pulse Dance Alliance, a partnership of 12 European dance festivals and institutions to promote, strengthen and broaden the contemporary dance sector.
