You’re invited to attend Big Pulse Reflections, a two-day professional forum focused on the importance of European collaboration for the future of the dance sector.

 

Taking place on 23 & 24 October in Turin, Italy during Torinodanza Festival, this encounter will feature a series of insightful talks, engaging panel discussions, and the official launch of the Dance Festivals Network Europe.

 

The event is co-funded by Creative Europe and promises to be a pivotal gathering for leaders and practitioners in the dance community.

Conference Schedule
DAY 1 – Wednesday 23 October

VENUE: Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano

  • 15h00 – Opening Announcements and Official Welcome Speeches
    A brief welcome from the festival, theatre and city hosts, followed by Big Pulse Dance Alliance directors to introduce the main aspects of the project, the conference and the future Dance Festivals Network Europe.

  • 15h25 – Introductory Inspirational Talk
    A performative talk on the challenges and hurdles for dance integration and collaboration in Europe, from the point of view of two artists based in Europe and playing important roles in their national dance scenes.

  • 15h45 – Panel Discussion: “The Importance of European Collaboration for the Future of the Dance Sector”
    Experts from curating, choreography, diversity, inclusion and cultural policies share insights on the current landscape, improvements to be made, and the future of collaborations within the dance sector.

** Tickets for the evening performances should be booked directly via Torinodanza Festival. A free shuttle service is also available, departing 30 minutes before the show from the Bengasi subway stop and will also be available for the return journey. Shuttle space is limited and booking is required.

DAY 2 – Thursday 24 October

  • 10h30 – Burning Questions
    Four workshops delving into topics raised by artists and curators during the course of the 4-year Big Pulse Dance Alliance project
    • Workshop 1: Scaling Up for Big Stages
      The existence of labels such as emerging, mid-career, mature typically comes along with a ceiling connected to the size of production, international recognition etc. How can artists deal with the growth in production size when taking these steps?

    • Workshop 2: Scaling Up for Open Air
      Dance in the open air fosters new audiences, raises the profile of the art and brings new perspectives to public spaces. What do artists and presenters need to consider when working outdoors?

    • Workshop 3: Equity and Inclusion
      Strategies and actions working towards equity and inclusion for artists and companies, as well as for festivals and venues are being put in place in many corners of the continent. How can festivals and artists work on their production processes and governance to achieve fairer results and sustain them?

    • Workshop 4: Festival Collaboration and the EU
      Festivals, many of which are currently supporting a number of artists and projects from Europe and beyond, are catalysts of experimentation and the perfect arena for the dance sector to test new solutions. How can different models of collaboration be introduced across the sector more widely to include all corners of the continent and how can the EU better support this?

  • 15h00 – “Walk and Talk” 
    An informal and intimate exchange between participants from the morning groups, where everyone speaks, everyone is heard and opinions can reverberate.

    Main issues from the morning workshops and discussions will be shared and incorporated into the draft of the Turin Declaration for collaboration on the dance ecosystem.

  • 16h15 – Reading of the Turin Declaration: Final Draft

  • 16h30 – Keynote Speech by Georg Haeusler, Director for Culture, Creativity and Sport in the European Commission
    A key note on how the European Commission prospects for Culture in general and for the Performing Arts under the new parliament and funding cycles, and on Culture as an important pillar for exchange with other continents.
  • 16h45 – Panel Discussion: Visioning Future Trajectories 
    Taking from the declaration, Founding Artistic Directors of the Dance Festivals Network Europe discuss what is being done and envisage what contributions the festivals can bring to the collective.
