ABOUT THE ARTIST
Taneli Törmä / LOCATION X is an award-winning Finnish choreographer and performing artist based in Denmark. As a teacher, performer, fundraiser, idea maker and curator, he focuses on developing the performing arts towards a more diverse, intercultural, multi-perspectival and innovative form. Taneli Törmä's / LOCATION X's works have been shown in more than 20 countries. His works have been selected twice for the Aerowaves - Dance Across Europe priority lists and he has received several international dance film prizes.
Alongside Törmä’s own work, LOCATION X has also initiated the programme DANCE ALL YEAR LONG, a mobile customised dance platform offered for different cities. Together with these municipalities, it supports other dance artists with residencies and gives an opportunity to present their work. The goal of LOCATION X is to create new bridges for contemporary dance and to find new audiences and collaboration partners for the art form - a platform for curating new perspectives and views about dance.
Taneli Törmä’s works are often immersive. He is driven by the interest to create situations and experiences that will carry a specific feeling and movement towards the public – always moved by the question on who is dancing, and how and where we can dance today in our everyday lives?
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Open Air Co-Production
For Steve Reich's iconic composition Music for 18 musicians, 10 local dancers will whirl us into a timeless dance.
ALIEN allows us to see and experience dance as a first-time experience. A meditative and timeless dance, a large living statue of people in motion placed in a public place in the city, an abstract and ritual act and a tribute to all those who are experienced as - and experience themselves as - alien (strangers).
ALIEN is part of Location X’s examination of how the art of dance and the common aesthetic experiences and realisations can be anchored in a city, in an area and in the individual human being.
Through the artistic sensations, the cohesive force is strengthened. It helps to create a stronger experience of belonging and being a part of society. When art finds a home and is anchored, then you will be anchored.
CO-PRODUCTION & CREDITS
ALIEN is a Big Pulse Dance Alliance co-production, co-produced by New Baltic Dance (Lithuania) and Dublin Dance Festival (Ireland), co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. Supported by Danish Arts Foundation, Odense Municipality.
