03. Burning Questions
The capacity building programme for artists, their producers and partner organisations was designed to stimulate rigorous artistic and project management and to define the tools for a positive working environment. A wide range of inspiring experts, advisors and peers were invited to Big Pulse Intensives and Local Pulses to address leadership, well-being, inclusion, sustainable working and tools for teamwork. The practicalities of scaling up to large stages were also addressed from the perspective of producers, agents, artists and programmers. The open air performance experts offered important advice for choreographers and organisers. Sustainability was discussed as a social, environmental, cultural and political issue. Special attention was given to the issue of future leadership, which was addressed in various discussions throughout the project.
Sustainability
Listen to Katarina Lindholm from Zodiak – Side Step Festival, as she delves into systemic thinking within the arts and dance sectors, exploring how interconnectedness and holistic approaches can significantly influence sustainability practices.
Equity and Inclusion
Equity and inclusion in the arts demand a proactive reevaluation of who participates in our conversations, emphasising the need to address the cultural invisibility of marginalised groups. By implementing practical changes to support entry into the field and enhance educational and leadership opportunities, we can foster true inclusivity. This effort requires us to use our influence thoughtfully, create meaningful networks, and be open to learning from others. True leadership involves continuous commitment to these values, ensuring our actions foster diverse perspectives and are not merely performative.
In the Big Pulse Intensives these topics were explored by experts – Delia Barker, Freddie Opoku-Addaie and Stine Nilsen – who drew from their extensive experience in various roles within the performing arts, engaged in a deep conversation about equity and inclusion. Together, they explored the questions that continue to emerge when working towards greater equity and inclusion.

Diverse programming
In contemporary dance, the underrepresentation of women choreographers and artists of colour on major stages was one of the pressing concerns of the Big Pulse partners. There was a desire to include diverse perspectives in festival programming to provide audiences with a richer and more varied artistic experience, reflecting contemporaneity and narratives aligned with current social dynamics.
Three quick tips for diverse programming
- Prioritise diverse programming by incorporating new voices, practices and aesthetics that reflect a wide range of artistic perspectives and cultural backgrounds.
- Review recruitment practices to attract a broader range of candidates. Use inclusive language in job descriptions and engage with diverse networks to ensure a more representative pool of applicants.
- Develop partnerships with local communities and cultural organisations. Engage with diverse groups to understand their needs and interests, and incorporate their feedback into programming.
